Neville started out as one of the least impressive students his own grandmother feared he was a Squib but he slowly evolved into the most noble, ethical, courageous character, starting from when he stood up to the Trio in Book 1. For someone who was nearly marked as The Chosen One, Neville sometimes behaved more like The Chosen One than Harry hes more self-motivated and bold than Harry ever was. From rallying students to rebel against the Carrows, to standing up to Voldemort after Harrys death, to destroying Nagini at the moment of truth, Neville found vast amounts of courage he never knew he had. He embodies, more than any of his classmates, the best qualities of Gryffindor House. And that, combined with his crucial contributions to Voldemorts downfall, makes him #1.
