The defender was a big part of the Sir Bobby Robson side that finished fourth, third and fifth and reached the Champions League. He made 102 league appearances for club before a dispute over his contract saw the Frenchman leave for Southampton in 2005. The Saints signed Bernard on a five-month contract - yet he only made 13 appearances - and when the south-coast side were relegated to the Championship, the club decided not to renew his deal.
