10 Times Sunderland Defied All Footballing Logic

4. Newcastle United 0-3 Sunderland (The First 1)

St James' Park, 14/4/2013. With Sunderland only out of the relegation zone on goal difference with six games left to play, this fixture was huge. The Wearsiders hadn't won at St James' Park in 13 years, and the general consensus among Sunderland fans was 'I'd take a point'.

What happened next was 100% madness. Having turned Steven Taylor inside and out multiple times already, Stephane Sessegnon cut inside from the left, and placed the ball into the bottom corner. The Sunderland fans went mad, as did Paolo Di Canio. The Italian ran down the touchline beating his chest and pumping his fists, unconcerned by the fact there was another hour of football yet to play.

In spite of being slightly more dominant, Newcastle were unable to capitalise on their chances. Two further screamers - one from David Vaughan, of all people - gave Sunderland a stunning 0-3 victory, which played a huge part in their Premier League survival.

The game was the first of six Tyne-Wear derby wins in a row for Sunderland, including another 0-3 win at St James' the following year.
