10 Times Sunderland Defied All Footballing Logic

3. The 2013/14 Capital 1 Cup Semi-Finals

22/1/2014, Old Trafford. Manchester United and Sunderland are contesting the second leg of a Capital One Cup semi-final. Sunderland had won the first leg 2-1, having also knocked out Chelsea at the Stadium Of Light in the previous round. In spite of their lead, Manchester United were expected to blow away Sunderland at Old Trafford to set up an all-Manchester final at Wembley.

Jonny Evans scored in the 37th minute for United, and a routine victory looked more than on the cards, so it seemed. Sunderland dug their heels in though, and took the game to extra time. Then chaos descended...

A howler from David De Gea saw a speculative shot in the 119th minute sneak in, and it looked like Sunderland - against the odds - would be heading to Wembley. However, in true Sunderland fashion, they allowed Manchester United to score from kick off, leading to a penalty shootout.

What followed was possibly the worst shootout in footballing history. Only three of the 10 penalties actually found the back of the net, and Sunderland, somehow, found themselves booking their place in the final.
