10 Underwhelming Arsenal Signings Who Became Cult Heroes

6. Nwankwo Kanu

Nwankwo Kanu may have scored 25 goals in 54 games for Ajax, and made a cameo appearance in the club's successful Champions League final meeting with AC Milan as an 18 year old, but when the Arsenal board decided to shell out £4.15 million for his services in February 1999, the only thing Gunners supporters were worrying about was the fact that he had just spent 30 months at Inter Milan whereby he had taken to the pitch on just 17 occasions, scoring just once. Never a prolific goal-scorer for the Gunners - his 44 in 197 appearances will testify to that - but the Nigerian international was certainly a useful asset for the side, so often unleashed from the bench as Highbury's very own answer to Ole Gunnar Solksjaer. Having endured an odd debut that was blighted by a media furore over a simple cultural miscommunication regarding Kanu's failure to kick the ball out of play following an injury in an FA Cup tie with Sheffield United, the African recovered to endear himself to Gunners supporters with his positive attitude and bubbly demeanour. In 2008, he as even voted 13th in a 'Gunners' Greatest 50 Players' Poll', despite never having really established a starting role for himself at the club.
