The German midfielder dynamo came off the bench at half-time to star in Liverpool's remarkable second-half comeback. A goal from Paolo Maldini and a brace from Hernan Crespo had put AC Milan 3-0 up after 44 minutes, but Steven Gerrard, Vladimir Smicer and Xabi Alonso levelled the game up by the hour mark. Hamann then scored the first of the Reds' spot-kicks as they ran out 3-2 winners on penalties on that mad May night in Istanbul.
