Weight Class: Featherweight And so we come to the main event, when the pride of Ireland Conor McGregor (172) takes on a man who he has derided and antagonized for the better part of a year - no, not Jose Aldo, but Chad Mendes (172), who McGregor has consistently called a midget. It's not the fight fans want, but it may be the fight McGregor deserves. While he's undefeated in the UFC, his detractors have complained he had an "easy" path to a title shot against Jose Aldo, with only Dustin Poirier being ranked in the top five when McGregor faced him. Easy road or not, McGregor has been finishing fights, but he's yet to face a wrestler of Mendes caliber. Mendes also has knockout power of his own, and has faced a who's who of the WEC and UFC, winning against all but Aldo himself. So despite having identical 17-2 records, Mendes has a far deeper cast of characters on his resume. What McGregor has in pinpoint accuracy and an eight inch reach advantage over the Team Alpha Male member. Will that be enough? As much as McGregor's story has been fascinating to watch unfold, probably not. He will get another shot, but this may very well mark his first loss in the UFC's octagon. Look for Mendes to capitalize, leading to Aldo vs. Mendes 3, a fight not a single fan was asking for. Mendes will employ his wrestling, stifling McGregor's offensive output until he can pound him out somewhere in the second half of the fight.
