announced yesterday that Manchester United have placed a bid for Arsenal striker Robin van Persie. The 29-year-old has been rumoured to be having a medical at a Manchester hospital in the next few days. Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted a deal is taking place but stated he was unclear on what Arsenal or Van Persie€™s reaction is to a move to Old Trafford. Here are five reasons why Fergie should give up the ghost and not bother signing Van Persie.

5. £20 Million Is Too Much For A 29-year-old

Robin van Persie is set to cost Manchester United between £20-25 million, but the Dutch international striker is 29-years-old. Manchester United have always been a club that delve into the market, but as the years have progressed Sir Alex has admitted the club aren€™t willing to pay ridiculous prices. Speaking after Manchester United lost out on Sao Paulo teenager Lucas Moura, Sir Alex stated that the Moura deal with Paris St Germain, worth around £35 million, was €˜ridiculous€™. United have paid big money before on a variety of players in the past, including Wayne Rooney. When 18-year-old Rooney signed from Everton to Old Trafford back in 2004, United had splashed £25.6 million on the future of the club. One of the biggest problems with Van Persie is the fact he is 29-years-old, he cannot be the future of any club anymore; he is the present and nothing more. Van Persie€™s goal threat may be enough to splash £25 million on, although when younger players have been on the market with a higher potential such as Moura, you have to question whether the deal is really worth it.
