Louis van Gaal decided to exploit Angel Di Maria's versatility and play him in nine different positions over the course of the season. The majority of formations that the Red Devils boss was experimenting with do not suit the Argentine's overall game. Di Maria is best suited to a diamond 4-4-2 where he can play on the left side of the centre midfield but he was rarely used in that position (four times in fact). Van Gaal would mainly play the 27-year-old high up on the left flank as part of a 4-5-1 or up front when using a 3-5-2. The former Benfica man is a fantastic ball carrier and can act as a devastating link between defence and attack. During his last year at Real Madrid, Carlos Ancelotti heavily relied on Di Maria's vision, pace and intelligence when playing his counter-attack formations. Isolating the midfielder by playing him high up on the left hand side is like never driving a Ferrari past 40mph.
