8 Newcastle United Players Fighting For New Contracts

4. Jonas Gutierrez

It is fair to say that if Newcastle United supporters had it their own way then Jonas Gutierrez would most certainly be offered a new contract by the club. The Argentine midfielder has made almost 200 appearances for the Magpies since signing from Mallorca in 2008 - and he has also battled back from testicular cancer to regain a first-team place. Gutierrez's return to the Newcastle fold against Manchester United at St James' Park back in March was an emotional day for all involved - but sentimentality is highly unlikely to feature in the club's decision on whether or not to extend the 31-year-old's deal. Having loaned Gutierrez to Norwich City last season, then-Magpies boss Alan Pardew had already told the midfielder he was no longer part of the club's future - and, despite some battling and industrious performances in recent weeks, the wages the 22-cap Argentina international would command in his early-30s are unlikely to convince the club to offer him a new contract. Verdict: 10% chance of a new deal. The United hierarchy appeared to make up their mind about Gutierrez a long time ago and, despite some battling displays following his return from cancer treatment, the Argentine is unlikely to be offered a new deal. It seems Gutierrez himself has already accepted this and he has started planning for life away from Tyneside.
