Despite the emotional lure of a return to his boyhood club already being extremely strong for Shearer, the centre-forward was dangerously close to signing for Manchester United before Newcastle United manager Kevin Keegan intervened at the 11th hour. With Shearer just about to put pen to paper on a deal to move to Old Trafford, Keegan requested a last-second meeting with Shearer in a bid to convince him to change his mind. After meeting with Keegan - a man many Geordies label as "The Messiah - Shearer became inspired by the Newcastle manager's vision, and decided he could not resist the temptation of moving to a club that he held so dear.
