Able to play in both midfield as well as at full-back, Watson made 154 Premier League appearances for Newcastle - primarily during Kevin Keegan's "Entertainers" era. After contributing 11 Premier League goals, Watson left for Aston Villa in 1998 and then played for Everton, West Bromwich Albion and Sheffield Wednesday. Since retiring, he has operated as Lee Clark's assistant at Huddersfield Town and Birmingham City.
