He may have come up through the academy at Sunderland alongside his brother, Ben, before switching to Newcastle but Alnwick failed to make a single first-team appearance between 2011 and December 2014. However, an injury crisis forced Alan Pardew to turn to Alnwick and, despite an encouraging 45-minute performance against Chelsea, the goalkeeper struggled in the first team. He was released at the end of the 2014-15 campaign having made six Premier League appearances for Newcastle.
