Arsenal: How Do They Fare For The Rest Of The Season After Mesut Ozil Signing?
£70 million in transfer funds to spend over the summer. With Arsenal fans getting excited for what lay ahead for their club, expecting big-name signings who would help them to their first trophy for 8 years, and being the only top four club to retain their manager, it was the opportune to take advantage. However, getting further and further into the window, fans were getting frustrated, Arsenal's only signing being French youngster Yaya Sanogo on a free transfer, who's playing time was mainly in the French Ligue 2 with AJ Auxerre. Despite his obvious potential, he was not the big-name signing Arsenal fans were looking for, and he unlikely to make much of an impact this season. Meanwhile, players where flooding out of the Emirates. Arshavin, Chamakh, Coquelin, Gervinho, Santos, Campbell just some of the players that had left Arsenal either on permanent deals or season long loans. Granted, they had not had the desired effect at the club, or had not yet reached their full potential, however, several injury blows had left Arsenal's squad the thin for the start on the season, especially at centre-back, and the lack of an out and out defensive midfielder was very noticeable. Come Arsenal's first game of the season vs the emerging Aston Villa, it was never going to be a good day for The Gunners. With the fans on the back of the manager for the lack of summer dealings, there was a negative atmosphere at the Emirates, and despite a good start with Olivier Giroud giving Arsenal and early lead, Villa soon capitalised, as Arsenal's attacking midfield left them vulnerable to the counter attack. And with the fans and players getting frustrated at the referee's decisions, with two penatlies being awarded to Villa and a red card for Laurent Koscielny (which left Arsenal with only one available centre-back), the game ended with the score being 3-1 to Villa. And to rub salt into the wounds, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain had picked up a hamstring injury which will put him out until November. Luckily for Arsenal, their next game was against an uninspiring Fenerbahçe, in the final Champions League qualifying match, Arsenal ran out 5-0 winners on aggregate, with Aaron Ramsey putting in two impressive performances against the Süper Lig runners-up. The win came at the right time for Arsenal, it was a big game for The Gunners, but they delivered (although Fenerbahçe did little to threaten), to put themselves into a tough Champions League group, and preventing a downward spiral. Between the game with Fenerbahçe, Arsenal comfortably dispatched a wasteful Fulham at Craven Cottage, a slower team than Villa, who are not as much as a threat on the counter attack, which helped out Arsenal, despite a much shuffled team thanks to injuries and suspensions, with Bacary Sagna having to fill in at centre-back, for the suspended Koscielny and injured Thomas Vermaelen. It had been a week of good performances from The Gunners, a good turn around after their opening day defeat to Villa. Then to top off what was a good week for The Gunners, Mathieu Flamini, 29, rejoined the team he left 5 years ago, on a free transfer. The Frenchman is the type of player Arsenal have been lacking, a defensive minded midfielder who will break up oppositions attacks, despite his lack of height and physical presence. However, it was clear more defensive options were required for Arsenal for them to really compete for the top two. Flamini's first task, was to help hold off late Tottenham onslaught, after coming on for Arsenal's prodigy Jack Wilshere (with the previous games putting a lot of stress on the youngster who had not been fully match fit), which was duly achieved as Arsenal recorded another impressive triumph in the North London derby, with a 1-0 victory. Again, it was fellow Frenchman Olivier Giroud with the goal for Arsenal, who appears to have found his feet in the Premiership, after an up and down first season at the Emirates. And then came transfer deadline day. With fans still desperate for money to be spent despite their victory the day before, Arsene Wenger finally went to work, first signing goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano on a season long loan from relegated Italian club Palermo, good competition for the inconsistent, however talented Polish international Wojciech Szczsny. And then came the big signing Arsenal fans had been begging for. However, is Arsenal's record buy the right man for them? Mesut zil is undoubtedly one of the best playmakers in football today, arguably the best even. The German's former manager Jose Mourinho certainly think so: "zil is unique, there is no copy of him. Not even a bad copy. He is the best No.10 in the world." He will undoubtedly be the man to stir up excitement, with not just Arsenal fans looking forward to see him perform in the Premier League. And it is not hard to see why, last season zil produced 10 goals and 29 assists, the most in La Liga that season. On top of that, he made 4 keys passes per game at Madrid, a very impressive stat. Alongside current fan favourites Santi Cazorla and Jack Wilshere, and not forgetting the ever improving Aaron Ramsey, Arsenal will definitely be a creative force this season, and if Giroud keeps up his impressive start to the season, Arsenal would be my favourites to be the league's top scores. Despite the excitement though, was this the right move for Arsenal? Was it a panic buy? Could the money have been better spent elsewhere? And was he brought in just to please the fans? Arsenal certainly succeed in the latter. And of course zil will improve Arsenal, and will cause big problems for Premiership defences, however he can only do so much. With only three centre-backs to chose from, and only one true out-and-out defensive midfielders, there is still cause for concern. As Aston Villa showed, Arsenal are vulnerable to counter attacks and bringing in zil will not fix that problem. I personally think the money could of been better invested in other areas of the team, at an earlier point of the transfer window, their defensive frailties should have been addressed. However, it can be argued that a big name signing like zil will now open the floodgates to other world-class player joining him at the Emirates, and this is definitely a valid point, however, with the window now closed until January, no improvements can be made for now, and it is going to take its toll the the Arsenal players. And if this was Arsene Wenger's thinking, then surely he should of made the deal happen earlier in the window, and if other top class players had joined, it would of been the perfect season for a title challenge, with various other top team changing managers. That is the frustrating truth for Arsenal fans, they may be excited now with their new star man, however I can't help but feeling, that all too soon they will be sent crashing down to Earth. It will definitely be an interesting period for Arsenal, and goals will galore, however, a fair share of those goals will not be in Arsenal's favour. If you are an Arsenal fan get ready, for exciting games, goals, and brilliant football. However, once again for Arsenal, it will be a roller coaster ride.
It has been a so-so summer for Arsenal. At the end of last season, chief executive Ivan Gazidis told the press that Arsene Wenger will have up to
