Arsenal Transfers: 10 Players Wenger Must Buy To Catch Chelsea

Who can the Frenchman sign to catch Mourinho's Blues?

Arsenal are generally considered to not be too far away from challenging for the Barclays Premier League title in the 15/16 season. The recent arrival of Petr Cech, mixed with the world-class talent of players such as Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Özil suggests The Gunners are the strongest they've been in over a decade, with Arsene Wenger no longer afraid to splash the cash on top players.

The arrival of Cech from domestic rivals Chelsea could finally be the world-class number one goalkeeper Arsenal have been struggling for in recent years, with both David Ospina and Wojciech Szczęsny struggling to nail down their spot in the starting eleven.

But is Petr Cech enough? Is that the final piece in the jigsaw to allow Arsenal to win their first league title since 2004? If not, who else do The Gunners need to sign in order to catch Chelsea?

The general feeling is that whilst Cech is a sign of great progress being made by the North Londoners, Arsenal need more. Several key areas are yet to be strengthened, with much room for improvement down the spine of the team.

Here's ten players that Arsene Wenger must pursue in order to catch Jose Mourinho's Chelsea in the Premier League this season.

10. Diego Godin (Atletico Madrid)

Arsenal are in desperate need of a world-class centre-back. Gabriel Paulista has looked a good addition since his arrival, but with Per Mertesacker's alarming lack of pace, and Laurent Koscielny's injury problems, Wenger must recruit. Nacho Monreal had to play centre-back at times last season, and Arsenal must surely have another defender on their radar.

Diego Godin has everything you want in a top level centre-back. He's strong, he reads the game well, he's a natural leader, and he is probably the best defender in the world at attacking set pieces. Godin has been capped 92 times by Uruguay, and has 155 appearances for Atletico Madrid to date.

Another of his key attributes is that he is a big game player. Arsenal have really struggled in recent years against their domestic rivals, and the man who scored at the Nou Camp on the final day of the season in 2014 to deliver Atletico Madrid's first title in 18 years may just be the difference.

At 29, Godin is at the peak of his powers, and signing the Uruguayan on a three-year deal might just pay dividends for Arsene Wenger.
