Arsenal Transfers: 10 Players Wenger Must Buy To Catch Chelsea
10. Diego Godin (Atletico Madrid)
Arsenal are in desperate need of a world-class centre-back. Gabriel Paulista has looked a good addition since his arrival, but with Per Mertesacker's alarming lack of pace, and Laurent Koscielny's injury problems, Wenger must recruit. Nacho Monreal had to play centre-back at times last season, and Arsenal must surely have another defender on their radar.
Diego Godin has everything you want in a top level centre-back. He's strong, he reads the game well, he's a natural leader, and he is probably the best defender in the world at attacking set pieces. Godin has been capped 92 times by Uruguay, and has 155 appearances for Atletico Madrid to date.
Another of his key attributes is that he is a big game player. Arsenal have really struggled in recent years against their domestic rivals, and the man who scored at the Nou Camp on the final day of the season in 2014 to deliver Atletico Madrid's first title in 18 years may just be the difference.
At 29, Godin is at the peak of his powers, and signing the Uruguayan on a three-year deal might just pay dividends for Arsene Wenger.
