Arsenal Transfers: 5 Players Arsene Wenger Could Have Signed But Didn't

2. Wilfried Zaha

For much of January, Wilfried Zaha was a reported transfer target for both Arsenal and Manchester United, after the young Crystal Palace winger impressed scouts with his performances that have so far helped Ian Holloway's promotion push to the Premier League. In December, it was reported that Arsene Wenger was "confident" he had beaten the likes of United to Zaha's signature, and was in the process of preparing a £9 million January bid.* However, Wenger later revealed that he didn't make a bid for the winger,** who eventually joined the Red Devils. It just seems odd that Wenger didn't at least test the waters with a bid, and it is perhaps indicative of his confidence in the transfer market that he seemed to pull out of an offer when the big teams came in.
