In the latter third of the last season Wenger stuck by a central defensive partnership of Mertesacker and Koscielny following a string of disastrous performances from captain Thomas Vermaelen. Vermaelen may well find his form again this coming season but Arsenal's defence clearly needs bolstering with someone who can offer a proper challenge to the established players. Enter Ashley Williams, who has been linked several times with the club and who made an impression on football's elite clubs following his turn as captain of the highly successful Swansea team that last season captured the League Cup.
