Paul Lambert is known for his preference to play attacking football, but things havent quite been working out for in that regard this season. Only 27 goals have been scored from 27 games for Lamberts team this season; meaning that they are only averaging a goal a game. As a means of comparison, Villa scored 47 goals from their 38 league games last season which is an average of 1.24 goals per game. Therefore, the team has certainly backwards in this regard. Nevertheless, it may partly be due to a change of approach from the management since they are conceding considerably less goals than they were last season. One of the problems for Villa is that they are one of the many teams in the league that have a negative goal difference due to conceding more goals than they have scored. So far this season, they have leaked 37 goals from their 27 games. This isnt one of the better records in the league as its only the 12th best defensive record. However, as mentioned earlier its still a big improvement on last season since they conceded 69 goals last season with only relegated sides Wigan and Reading conceding more. The frustration for the club is this improved defensive performance hasnt necessarily made them a better side, since their offensive performance has now gone backwards.
