1. Liverpool 3-3 AC Milan (Liverpool win 3-2 on penalties) (2005)
Was there any doubting this was going to be number one? This final had it all, a dominant first half display, an incredible comeback, some amazing goalkeeping and one of the most exciting penalty shoot outs in the history of the game. This final is the greatest Champions League finals of all time and one of, if not the greatest finals of all time. Things didnt start well for Rafa Benitezs men, after an incredible semifinal victory over Chelsea, the reds fell behind inside a minute to AC Milan thanks to a Maldini goal. Things then went from bad to worse for the Premiership team as Hernan Crespo turned on the class, scoring two goals in six minutes to send Milan into the break 3-0 up. Then what happened in the second half was nothing short of miraculous. Liverpool came out all guns blazing, a 54th minute goal from Captain Steven Gerard was followed two minutes later by Vladmir Smicer then with AC on the ropes Liverpool struck again, Xabi Alonso grabbing the equaliser in the 60th minute. Liverpool continued to hold on to the game despite the pressure from Milan with a starting XI that included the likes of Shevchenko, Crespo and Kaka. The game ultimately ended up going to penalties and what followed is the stuff of legend. Jerzy Dudek, a keeper hardly renowned for his heroics, etched his name into the Liverpool history books by first distracting Serginho into shooting over the bar by replicating Bruce Grobbelaars iconic spaghetti legs stance, then by saving two more penalties, one from Pirlo and one from Shevchenko to win Liverpool their fifth Champions League and complete the most unlikely comeback in the tournaments history.
