Though he doesn't have the legs to come off the bench and run defenders ragged in the closing third of a game, what Eto'o has is arguably more valuable as a substitute. There are some expectations that a late substitute in an attacking position would be designed to take advantage of greater fitness - as Arsenal may use Joel Campbell this season and how Craig Bellamy was used at the end of his career, including at Liverpool - but even tired defenders can sit back and create space in front of them to tire out the younger, fitter opponent. With Eto'o Liverpool would be bringing on a striker with guile and supreme experience, whose brain is arguably his most important asset in scoring goals. His pace has slowed down somewhat now , but movement can make up for that short-fall, and it is far harder for a tiring defender to have to deal with someone who is looking for space and making shorter, more incisive runs than someone brought on simply to run and exploit.
