3. vs. Juventus

Competition €“ Champions League, Date €“ 21st April 1999, Score €“ 3-2 After beating Inter Milan 3-1 on aggregate in the quarter finals of the Champions League, United were drawn against Juventus for the semi finals. A tough first leg at Old Trafford ended 1-1 only thanks to a late goal from Ryan Giggs, giving the Italian giants an advantage (owing to the away goals rule) going into the second leg in Turin. Two goals from Filipo Inzaghi in the first eleven minutes seemed to have sealed the tie, but United's never-say-die attitude was personified by captain Roy Keane, who picked up a yellow card (ruling him out of the final) but selflessly led by example, scoring after 24 minutes to keep United's hopes alive. An equaliser (and second away goal) from Dwight Yorke put United in the driving seat ten minutes later, before the team hit the post twice and Inzaghi had another goal for Juventus ruled out for offside. Andy Cole finally sealed things in the 84th minute to record their first ever competitive victory in Italy and set up a final date with Bayern Munich.
