While for a long time it seemed almost certain that van Gaal would be the new United boss, what was not so clear was who would be his number two. Indeed, until recently, it appeared as though Patrick Kluivert would be his assistant. The former Dutch striker is currently working with van Gaal as part of the national side set-up and reports claim that he was the new United managers first choice to be his number two. However, the United hierarchy had other ideas. Kluivert has repeatedly said he is keen to head to Old Trafford too, but whether that is still the case now Giggs is number two remains to be seen. The fact that Giggs was not van Gaals choice of assistant manager is a clear point of friction and if Kluivert joins too, then the problem could easily boil over.
