A former member of the famous French 'Clairefontaine Academy', much was expected of Gabriel Obertan when he joined Manchester United from Bordeaux in 2009. The then 20-year-old winger demonstrated pace and speed in his early outings and looked a real livewire on the flanks, but his game lacked goals - he scored just one for United, in Europe - and he was ultimately sold to Newcastle after just two seasons. In a recent interview, Obertan blamed injury and inconsistency for his short spell at Old Trafford, after suffering a fracture to his back that kept him out for five months. By the time he returned, the likes of Nani, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, Anderson and Antonio Valencia were all ahead of him in the pecking order, and he was deemed surplus to requirements. He hasn't fared much better in the North East following his move, either, having played a mere six minutes of football on Tyneside so far this season.
