Mark Bosnich had two stints at Manchester United, and both were as miserable as each other. Bosnich began his career at Old Trafford as a youth academy member in 1989 but bought out his contract after just three appearances for the Red Devils and left making just three appearances. A decade on, following spells at Sydney United and Aston Villa, the Australian returned to United in 1999 as yet another failed bid by Alex Ferguson to replace Peter Schmeichel. Bosnich as a brief stint as No.1 at Old Trafford, but following the arrival of Fabien Barthez he fell down the pecking order and became third choice under Ferguson. The keeper never played again for United after Barthez's arrival and in January 2001 he signed for Chelsea on a free, but his career hit rock-bottom in 2002 when he failed a drugs test. Bosnich was sacked by the Blues and banned from football for nine months. In his autobiography, Sir Alex Ferguson branded the goalkeeper a "terrible professional".
