Man Utd Transfer News: £25m Plus Player For Luka Modric

Is Sir Alex Ferguson on the verge of landing the highly-rated Croatian midfielder?

Caughtoffside.com, Manchester United are set to once more throw their hat into the ring in the battle to sign Tottenham Hotspur's Croatian playmaker Luka Modric. United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has been strongly linked with the player for much of the summer, though it has looked increasingly likely in recent weeks that the player was set to make a move to Real Madrid, with Champions League winners Chelsea also interested. But with that deal still incomplete, and Modric still with Spurs, United are ready to make an offer to Spurs chairman Daniel Levy for one of their star players, who has already seemingly been written off as a lost cause with Gylfi Sigurdsson already brought in as a straight replacement. New Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas has openly admitted that his team are ready to accept offers for Modric, if the right price is met, after being boosted by the news that Gareth Bale is happy enough to stay at White Hart Lane that he has signed a new four year contract at the club. According to those reports, Sir Alex is set to offer Spurs their asking price of £25m, as well as one of either Brazilian midfielder Anderson or Bulgarian international striker Dimitar Berbatov, who are both seen as surplus to requirements at Old Trafford. Berbatov would likely be the least appealing of the two options for Spurs, where the Bulgarian spent two seasons, and though he has openly asked for a move away from Old Trafford, his future probably lies away from the Premier League. He only started five games last year after dropping down the pecking order with the emergence of Danny Wellbeck, and he now looks set to move away from the club, either this summer or next when his contract runs out. Even though the player has scored an impressive 27 goals in his last 44 Premier League games, the recent acquisition of Emmanuel Adebayor from Man City will mean limited opportunities for the Bulgarian at White Hart Lane, meaning that Andre Villas-Boas might be more attracted to a deal involving midfielder Anderson. Like Berbatov, Anderson is expected to move on this summer, and he might be an option for midfield depth for Villas-Boas as he looks to make his own mark on the Spurs squad. Man United are keen to bring in a long-term successor to Paul Scholes for the creative central midfield role, and see the opportunity to bring in Modric as the ideal solution to the former England star's advancing years and the likelihood that he will play less football this term after coming out of retirement last season.
