As the 2012/13 Premier League season draws ever nearer, Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson will be ramping up his efforts in July and August to bring in the new recruits that can ensure the Red Devils don’t once again end up straggling behind the “noisy neighbors” Manchester City.

Manchester United’s well documented financial situation is obviously poor compared to most top teams, but Fergie does have some money to spend on new talent.

Here is a list of 10 realistic players that Manchester United should buy this season in order to reclaim the Premier League title;

1. Leighton Baines

Age: 27

Club: Everton

Position: Defender

It’s not surprising that Manchester United are actively looking for a replacement for aging French left-back Patrice Evra. His consistent performances and experienced defending has made him crucial part of United’s success over the years, although at the age of 31, his time at the top might be coming to an end and the Old Trafford boss has already signalled who his long term replacement will be.

Man United are believed to have made overtures this summer for Everton and England full-back Leighton Baines, with the Kirby born left-sided defender said to be interested in moving to Manchester. The sticking point has been over the fee with Everton believed to be holding out for £15 million as Baines has become a key man in the Toffees first eleven since his move from Wigan in 2007.

With this in mind and the fact Fergie has allowed youngster Fabio to go on loan at QPR, the arrival of Baines would be just what the Red Devils needed for next season. Fergie may have to sell some of his fringe players such as Anderson and Johnny Evans to fund the move and perhaps even cash in on Patrice Evra but the signing of Leighton Baines must be seen as a priority for United as they prepare for next season.
