Man Utd Transfers: Could David Beckham Still Do A Job At Old Trafford?

By Martin Blessing /

Regarded by some as one of the greatest right midfielders and undoubtedly one the greatest ever dead ball specialists football has ever seen. Many at Old Trafford still hail him as a messiah, but could David Beckham still be a useful weapon at Manchester United, at the ripe old age of 37? We all know of David's abilities, the most obvious being his right foot in a dead ball situation. His accuracy and finesse when it comes to a free kick is unrivalled and very few have a technique as gifted as he does. Even at 37, he can still produce the same level of consistency with his free kicks than he could 10 years ago. So in one sense, yes David could still bring something to the current Manchester United squad which does lack a certain dead ball specialist. But let's take a look at his other abilities. There are very few 37 year olds running about the Premier League these days and given the fast paced attitude of the game today, it's certainly not getting any easier for players to continue playing past their thirties and Mr Beckham certainly hasn't got the pace needed anymore. Let's be honest, David was never the quickest player on the planet and was never renowned for his ability to beat a player, but given his age and current fitness levels this is a skill which I'm afraid won't cut it with the top dogs of the Premier League. His passing abilities are still second to none however, with David still being able to pick a pass from anywhere on the field and provide near perfect accuracy, but would he ever get a chance to do so with his now, slower than usual game play? I feel like the wrong question is being asked and it's not whether Beckham could do a job at Old Trafford, but whether he can provide anything for football anymore? It sounds like a horrible thing to say, but even good things come to an end and like many other footballing legends before him, it may be time to call it a day and hang up his boots. Let's face it, all that a club would really want him for these days is to boost shirt sales at a club tenfold and given David€™s iconic status, shirt sales become something of a cash cow for any club he plays for. So I don't believe David could do anything for his boyhood club anymore and whether he would be let back in whilst Sir Alex is in charge is a whole new debate. But needless to say, David has provided English football with fantastic memories and nobody can deny what a truly great player David is.
