McClaren Wants To Unlock Newcastle's "Big Potential" - And Does Not Want Any Other Job
NUFC is the place for Steve.
Steve McClaren has "no ambitions" to manage any other football club - and says he wants to "make it work" at Newcastle United and help the Magpies finally achieve their "big potential". The ex-England and Middlesbrough boss will take charge of his first competitive game as Newcastle head coach when United host Southampton in the Barclays Premier League on Sunday (1.30pm kick-off). And McClaren is quite clearly enthused by the prospect of walking out at St James' Park and taking his place in the home dugout - or more likely the directors' box, at least for the first-half - as head coach of the home side. In fact, McClaren is adamant there is no job he would rather hold in football than that of Magpies head coach. Quoted in the Shields Gazette, McClaren said ahead of the Saints game:
"This is it - it is Newcastle United. "You want to come back in the Premier League, and if you want to pick a club, there are not many as big as Newcastle United in terms of potential. "Wherever you go, you want to make it work. Thats the difference. "Before, it was drive and ambition and everything, now it is: 'Lets do the job.' That is what I want to do. "Wherever I have been since then (Middlesbrough, England, FC Twente, Wolfsburg, Nottingham Forest and Derby County), I have said: 'Thats it - I just want to do the job here, and not have ambitions for anywhere else.' And so I am here (at Newcastle)."Will McClaren still be as upbeat come full-time on Sunday? The Toon faithful certainly hope so...
