Newcastle Linked To Jonathan Soriano As Striker Hunt Intensifies

Newcastle have reportedly added a new name to an ever-growing list of striking targets with Red Bull Salzburg forward Jonathan Soriano (above, left) linked with a move to St James' Park this morning. While we continue to focus our attention on the finalisation of the deal for Tenerife attacker Ayoze Perez there is a minor link to Soriano in the Journal that hinted the Club could be interested in acquiring the former Espanyol youth academy graduate. Despite having three years to run on his contract at the Red Bull Arena it's believed we could pick up the 28-year-old for as little as £2 million in the summer and he would be a relatively inexpensive addition to a squad gravely lacking in firepower. His statistics certainly paint a picture of a prolific marksman. In the 72 games he's played for Red Bull since being plucked from the obscurity in Barcelona B he's found the net 60 times and was top scorer in the Europa League last season as Salzburg reached the last-16. Whether he can translate that goalscoring prowess to the Premier League will undoubtedly be questioned, but in our minds the risk factor of bringing Soriano to St James' Park is low and he would arrive as a relatively unknown quantity which could work in our favour.
