Newcastle Signing Toney Declares: "The Bigger The Stage, The Better I Play"
It looks like NUFC's latest acquisition is confident in his own ability.
latest signing oozed confidence in his first official interview after signing for the club - with the ex-Northampton Town forward declaring: "The bigger the stage, the better I play." The Magpies completed the acquisition of Toney on Thursday, with the 19-year-old forward signing a "long-term deal" at St James' Park, and the forward does not seem overawed by making the huge step-up from League Two football to the Barclays Premier League. And the ex-League Two hitman admitted he is "happy" to be on Tyneside, and intends to let his "feet do the talking". Speaking to NUFCTV, Toney said:
Newcastle United's "Last season I played well and started scoring a few goals and then there was a drought around when I was going to go to Wolves. I didn't get back on form but then towards the end of the season I starting picking it up and getting more and more goals. "Then pre-season there was talk about me coming to Newcastle and then I just kept on doing my thing and let my feet do the talking - now I'm happy I'm here. "It was basically a two-day trial really. Just had to put my all in and show what I'm all about. Luckily enough I done all right and the managers liked what they've seen and invited me back. "(On the step-up to the Premier League from League Two) I like to say: 'the bigger the stage, the better I play.' But we'll see, I might crumble under 50,000 fans but yeah I'm looking forward to it (playing in the PL). "I'm a confident lad. I like to consider myself confident. Obviously being a young lad, scoring a few goals in the Football League is great to do. I don't think there's many out there. I'm not blowing my own trumpet but I'm just looking to keep scoring goals in the Premiership (Premier League)."For Newcastle fans who are unfamiliar with Toney's playing style, the striker played 53 times for the Cobblers and scored 11 league goals - having made his debut at the age of 16. And when asked what sort of a player he was himself, Toney told NUFCTV:
"I like to get the ball into to feet but whatever my job and whatever the manager wants me to do really I'll do a job. I like to get the ball into feet and score lots of goals. "I like to consider myself quick and sharp and strong, and that's mainly what a striker needs really - hold the ball up, get in behind with pace and yeah (I got) a few goals last season. Hopefully I can get a few more this season."Interestingly, Toney was booked 10 times in all last season, suggesting he has a bit of a fiery temper. When asked about it, the forward said to NUFCTV:
"Silly yellow cards really. Silly little clips and stuff. "I'm sure I'll learn from that and be able to keep my temper."The full interview can be watched HERE at NUFC.co.uk.CLICK HERE to read "10 Things Newcastle Fans Need To Know About Ivan Toney".For all the latest NUFC News, Views and Transfers make sure to follow WhatCulture.com/NUFC on Twitter and Facebook.
