Newcastle Transfer News: Loic Remy Deal In Doubt After QPR & German Interest?

Loic Remy's move to Newcastle in doubt after German interest?

By Joseph Dempsey /

Newcastle United target Loic Remy's proposed move to Tyneside could be under threat, with a number of club's hoping to hijack his transfer to St James' Park, according to a report on NUFC.com The Magpies were hopeful of signing the French international this month as a replacement for the departed Demba Ba, but interest from Premier League rival QPR as well as German side's Borussia Dortmund and Schalke 04 appear to have scuppered the deal. R's manager Harry Redknapp was spotted in the stands of the Velodrome as he watched the forward play for current side Marseille. The QPR manager is thought to be a keen admirer of the 26-year old and is looking to bolster his ranks this month in a bid to get his side off the foot of the Premier League table. However, French TV reported post-match that the player had rejected overtures from QPR, making German side's Borussia Dortmund and Schalke the favourites to land his signature, despite claims made by Marseille sporting director Jose Anigo that the player is "1000% a Marseille player". He said:
"He's here. He's training. He's 1000% an OM player. We're not talking about anything else. As things stand today, there is no offer."
However, he later added to that by claiming that if a "big club" came in for the player, Marseille would be forced to listen to offers.
"Some English clubs are looking at our players and have not yet come knocking on the door. It will come. The only window of opportunity at the moment is for Loic Remy, if a big club comes for him and he is interested. We will see, but otherwise no one will go.
Quite whether Newcastle United are considered "a big club" is debatable. This latest statement would also appear to rule out QPR, who are at the bottom of the Premier League. Borussia Dortmund certainly would fit the bill as "a big club" - they are currently in the Champions League Last 16 having qualified ahead of Premier League Champions Manchester City and have won the Bundesliga for the last two seasons.
