After a busy 48 hours that saw the captures of both French attacking midfielder Remy Cabella and Dutch full-back Daryl Janmaat (whose signature is yet to be officially confirmed by the club), Newcastle United have moved to add another player to their new look squad with the acquisition of Monaco's French striker Emmanuel Riviere. The deal has been called complete by French journalist Nicolas Vilas of Ma Chaine Sport, who says that the club are set to pay 8m Euros for the striker who only joined Monaco in 2013 after two years at Toulouse. https://twitter.com/nicolas_vilas/status/489127140701765632 The announced figure might come as a surprise to Newcastle's fans, who have seen an impressively low outlay so far this summer for Ayoze Perez, Jack Colback, Siem De Jong, Cabella and Janmaat, and there should be concerns that the club are investing in a striker who scored only 14 times for Monaco in 44 appearances last season, and failed to make a massive impact despite the injury to Radamel Falcao. That sentiment has been echoed by journalists based in France who have called the deal as the best business Monaco have done in years, which offers some indication of how they rate the player: https://twitter.com/Gibney_A/status/489134471103266816 The truth is, Riviere is still young at 24, and his record so far has largely been with mid-table French sides, and you can't really argue with 40 goals and 20 assists in 150 appearances for a youngster. And Graham Carr doesn't make decisions lightly on players. Meanwhile, Newcastle are apparently also looking at other senior striking options, with Demba Ba a no-go, and links emerging to both Loic Remy and Andy Carroll in recent days. What do you think of this signing? Will Riviere be a hit on Tyneside? Share your thoughts below in the comments thread.
