Premier League: 10 Contenders To Win PFA Player Of The Year Award

By Callum Wiggins /

5. Michu

The only player on this list turning out for a club outside the top six, the success of Swansea's season has completely hinged on the performances of the signing of the season, Michu. It is not a coincidence that during his current dry spell the Welsh clubs' form has dropped drastically, alongside the well-established curse of winning the Capital One Cup. The Spaniard though took to the Premier League like a duck to water (or swan, if you prefer), and from being a relative unknown even within his home country, his fifteen league goals this year have once again helped Swansea to mid-table safety, won them a cup, and placed him in the reckoning to earn a cap for the Spanish national side that lacks a consistent striker. Can a player that competes for a club like Swansea be considered a genuine contender for the PFA Player of the Year Award? It's unlikely for him to receive any more than a nomination, which would be a great achievement in itself for a debut season with a club that is still not fully established in the division. His form certainly has been worse in the second half of the year, but very few players in the league have played well throughout the entire year. This shouldn't stand in Michu's way, but the issue of playing for a side that is not at the top end of the table may be his undoing, as the last time a player won the award from a relatively small club was David Ginola in 1999. Michu may have had a great season, but it would have had to have been beyond extraordinary to break the top sides' stranglehold over this award. Swansea and Michu should just concentrate on getting back into form and remaining a unit amid the gaze of the bigger sides. Chances of winning: Deserves nomination, but won't be his year
