Southampton Transfers: 5 Players Saints Must Keep This Summer

By James Kent /

3. Morgan Schneiderlin (Defensive Midfielder)

Morgan Schneiderlin is another very important part of the Southampton machine; he is that midfield general that all successful teams need. The Frenchman is very much in his prime still at just 24 years of age, and certainly a player that the club would want to make use of for years to come. An average rating of 7.27 this season gives a clear indication of both his quality and the consistency that he brings to the Saints midfield. Admittedly, he doesn€™t offer much from an attacking sense with just one goal and one assist all season, but that isn€™t really his game. Southampton had one of the leading defensive records earlier on in the season, and still have the seventh best defensive record in the Premier League €“ and Schneiderlin plays an important part in that. The French midfielder€™s qualities are underpinned by his tacking and passing ability; this season he has made 3.8 tackles per game and enjoys a passing accuracy of over 88%. It€™s these qualities and more that mean that it€™s vital the player remains at the club beyond this summer.
