8. Paulinho (£17 Million)

Like Roberto Soldado, Paulinho was brought in during the mass influx of summer 2013. The Brazilian international had come out of nowhere and was suddenly one of the hottest properties in world football. He had spent time playing in some of the poorer European leagues (like Lithuania and Poland), as well as for Bragantino in the second tier in Brazil, before he finally found his form at Corinthians. A call-up to the Brazilian national side soon followed and he was one of the stars of the Confederations Cup in 2013. He scored in a pre-tournament friendly against England, he scored in Brazil's opener against Japan and he scored in the semi-final against Uruguay. He also played very well in the final as Brazil outclassed the World and two-time defending European champions Spain. He received the Bronze Ball as the competition's third best player and was soon being touted by the likes of Chelsea and Real Madrid, but opted to sign for Spurs for £17 million. His first season was not that of a £17 million player. He showed signs of class at times, scored six Premier League goals, but was often anonymous in matches and Tim Sherwood dropped him entirely when he took over from Andre Villas-Boas. He had a poor World Cup 2014 in his homeland and is being linked with moves to Juventus and Chelsea, but Spurs fans will surely be hoping he stays and plays as well as he can in this coming season.
