Sunderland's New Manager: 5 Mad Moments From Paolo Di Canio

By Joseph Dempsey /

4. Bust Up With Leon Clarke

After calling time on his storied playing career with Cisco Roma in 2008, Di Canio made the move into management three years later when he took charge of League Two outfit Swindon Town in 2011, and the Italian didn't take long to make headlines at the County Ground. In the first month of the season, Swindon were defeated 3-1 at home to Southampton and fitness coach Claudio Donatelli decided the under-performing players needed an extra training session as punishment for their shortcomings. Leon Clarke, who had just moved from Queens Park Rangers 11 days prior, took exception with this and started ranting and swearing at Di Canio as he left the field. The Italian attempted to calm him down by putting a friendly arm around his shoulder, trying to lead him peacefully down the tunnel to the dressing room away from the prying TV cameras, but Clarke wouldn't hear of it. He continued his tirade against his manager and as the duo reached the end of the tunnel, a fierce fracas could be heard. Clarke moved to the County Ground from QPR on a two-year deal - he played just two games for Swindon and was flogged on loan to Chesterfield, in case you were wondering who won the argument.
