10. The Companion

The Companion was introduced to humanity as a gaseous creature. It saved Zefram Cochrane's life, rejuvenating the inventor when his shuttle was badly damaged. However, even though the two managed to connect on a psychic level, there was a lack of communication that couldn't be solved.

The arrival of the Shuttlecraft Galileo changed things. Commissioner Nancy Hedford, herself suffering a fatal disease, was being transported by Kirk and crew when the shuttle was forced to land on The Companion's world.

What followed was an act of selflessness, mixed with selfishness - for all the right reasons. The Companion, an immortal being in its natural state, merged with Hedford. This resulted in the Commissioner receiving a new lease on life, while the Companion was now able to understand both human emotion and the sensation of touch.

Cochrane and Hedford/The Companion then began their new chapter of life. The life-saving energies of the Companion were drained in the merge, so all would eventually die, but at least in this form, they could live for years before that would happen.
