There are few things more infuriating than finding out that one of your favourite TV shows has just been cancelled; you've invested countless hours in not just watching but theorising about it, and now you're probably going to be deprived of answers as the show is unceremoniously hurled into the televisual abyss, never to be heard from again (except in a few lucky cases). With their crushing lack of closure combined with the fact that they consistently outshone dreck that continues to get renewed (I almost hate to say it, but does anyone like the new Simpsons episodes?), it's a frustrating testament to the fickle nature of the TV industry. Some of these shows have been teased with returns, though given that little of that information is concrete, we'll presume they're stone-dead for now. Here are awesome TV shows cancelled before their time...
10. Twin Peaks
David Lynch's wonderfully demented soap opera satire was one of the definitive "water cooler shows" of the 1990s; everyone was talking about it, desperate to know who killed Laura Palmer. It boasted outstanding acting from top to bottom, and true to Lynch's form, was hilariously weird and genuinely creepy all at the same time. However, Lynch made a rookie mistake by giving the game away too early, revealing who killed Palmer half-way through the second season, and once the cat was out of the bag, the show was never able to recover the same level of intrigue and suspense. The storylines that followed just weren't as interesting, and both Lynch and co-creator Mark Frost expressed regret that they ever gave away the identity of the murderer. Fearing they were going to be cancelled, they ended the second season on an infuriating cliffhanger in which Kyle McLachlan's Agent Cooper appeared to become possessed by the mysterious Bob, something that has left viewers feverishly debating it ever since. Rumours have abounded recently about a third season which would see Cooper become the antagonist of the show, but it's doubtful that it'll ever happen.
