10 Best Final Seasons In TV History

3. Twin Peaks (Twin Peaks: The Return)

Three years since its original release, this series continues to be a mind-bender, but remains not just one of the greatest final seasons, but one of the greatest pieces of television of all time.

Fans of the original 1990s show had been longing for answers for 25 years, after the show left good-hearted FBI agent Dale Cooper trapped in the supernatural red room. When it was announced Twin Peaks: The Return would be a continuation of the show, many were eager to see more of Cooper's heroism.

Of course, this is David Lynch, so nothing is that simple. Instead of seeing our Cooper back in action from the off, we instead followed his evil doppelganger to see what he'd become over the past couple of decades, as well as catching up with many of the inhabitants of Twin Peaks, many of who came back in strange and unimaginable ways themselves (Audrey's story in particular is tragic). When Cooper does finally return, he's not the man he once was and the story becomes a race against time as the people around him try to jog his memories.

This leads up to an incredible show-stopping finale in which the agent is back on full form, at which point Lynch pulls the wool from under our eyes again, as the real purpose of the show becomes apparent - Cooper is out to save Laura Palmer from her original fate.

With some incredible visuals, amazing performances by Kyle MacLachlan and Laura Dern in particular, and countless symbolic imagery, the whole thing is just a remarkable piece of TV art from start to finish.

The ending did leave room open for a sequel, so this entry might become outdated in a few years. However, if this was the end for one of the greatest shows on the planet, it's incredibly satisfying to know it ended on such a high note, mesmerising the minds of its audience and subverting expectations over and over.
