3. Greendale’s The Way It Goes

Whichever side you sit on of the Chevy Chase and Dan Harmon public fallout, it’s undeniably that Pierce’s character got slowly worse over the years. Not in an entertainment sense necessarily, but as far as being a good person.

He was always bumbling, braggadocios, and a bit of a bore, but there was kindness too. Later seasons stripped that away, making him a crueller, more villainous character. Back when he was more balanced though, he was responsible for one of Community’s best songs... with more than a little help from Bruce Hornsby.

After agreeing to help Annie with an official Greendale song, Pierce realises he’s a total fraud. Rather than let Annie down though, he comes up with a cunning plan. At the ceremony, he simply plays the Bruce Hornsby classic The Way It Is, changing the words from the instantly recognisable tune to suit Greendale more.

The comedy timing is genius, it’s so nonsensical yet fits the scene perfectly, and ends up tying the whole episode together brilliantly. By not writing a song at all, Pierce accidentally put together one of Greendale’s best ever hits.
