10 Biggest (And Best) Differences In Game Of Thrones Season 4 From The Books

7. The Gold Mines Of The Westerlands Are Dead

This was probably one of the biggest reveals of the whole season, if not the whole series, yet no one seemed to give it much notice. But they should, since it essentially lends a large amount of urgency and no small sense of desperation to the Lannister€™s hold on the Seven Kingdoms. It€™s well known throughout the books that the Crown owes stupid amounts of gold to both the Lannisters and the Iron Bank of Braavos, but never at any point are we led to believe that the golden lions themselves are bleeding chips. Not only does this massively important tidbit give a whole wealth of justification for marrying the hell out of the Tyrells, the second wealthiest family in Westeros, it also serves to show just how vulnerable and broken the Lannisters really are. This is just one of many instances this season in which the stones that make up the foundation of House Lannister are seen to be crumbling.
