10 Comic Book TV Shows Cancelled Before Their Time
8. Witchblade (2001)
Witchblade was a series created for the TNT network, which aired from 2001 to 2002 with only two seasons and 23 episodes. The show was developed from the comic of the same name published by Image Comics/Top Cow Productions and featured the characters from those books.
Oddly enough, Witchblade was a mega-hit with critics and fans, which made its cancellation one of the strangest in television history. It holds the distinction of being the highest-rated TV series to be cancelled, but there may have been a practical reason for its cancellation.
Yancy Butler, the actress who played Detective Sara "Pez" Pezzini and the main star of the series, entered rehab for alcoholism in September 2002. The show was cancelled the same month, which led to widespread speculation her treatment was the reason for cancellation. This was pretty much confirmed by Top Cow editor Matt Hawkins who spoke on the cancellation when it occurred.
While the original series is long gone and it doesn't look like anyone involved will be returning, NBC announced in January 2017 that it was developing a new Witchblade series for the network. The new series will be a reboot with entirely new players and could air in 2019 or beyond.
