10 Crazy Ideas For Seasons 4 & 5 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds
5. Introducing Commodore Matthew Decker
Matthew Decker was a celebrated Starfleet captain by the late 2250s, according to Saru's research. However, there is little depiction of this, as the only on-screen appearance by the man, to date, is in the episode The Doomsday Machine. There, William Windom was playing anything but a stable and commanding officer.
In Star Trek history, the man is promoted from captain to commodore before Kirk's promotion to the captain's chair. While the USS Constellation has already been mentioned in dialogue in the episode The Sehlat Who Ate Its Tail, it has yet to be shown intact. Rather, that ship is seared into memory as the battered and broken vessel in The Original Series.
The Deckers don't have a great track record in Star Trek. Matt lost his entire crew, then his ship and his life, battling an enemy far beyond him. Will was listed missing in action, following the events surrounding V'Ger. Therefore, redeeming the name would seem not only a prudent move for the franchise but it would also help to expand Starfleet's history of success and distinction.
Commodore Matt Decker is the man who took on a foe and lost, with hundreds of people paying the price. With this series coming to a close, yet still existing in that exact timeframe, Decker's reputation may still have a chance at absolution, most likely in a situation that sees him saving the Enterprise.
