Doctor Who is one of the most popular and widely discussed shows of all time and landing a coveted role - guest, leading or otherwise - in the series is a prestigious accolade to say the very least. In fact, it's usually the highlight of an actor's career. While a lot of its alumni go onto bigger and better things, they never quite manage to replicate the success of their respective tenures aboard the TARDIS. Doctor Who is a unique beast in the sense that there's literally nothing like it on TV, and the ongoing extra terrestrial escapades of our iconic hero are still managing to push the boundaries of British drama after half a century in operation. Sometimes, though, it's just as turbulent for TV's favourite Time Lord off screen, too. The process of casting a character is a long and gruelling process and sometimes a name is put forward for one role and they end up landing a completely different one. And it's not just bit parts, either. Sometimes even Doctors and companions only came to the attention of the show's producers because they initially screen tested for another part. Don't believe us? Here are 10 actors who almost played different characters. Some of them might just shock you...
