Everyone has their favourite Doctor. It might have been Tom Baker or David Tennant, Patrick Troughman or Peter Capaldi. And so, for every incarnation of the Doctor we never wanted to leave, there has to be one we couldn't wait to push out of the TARDIS mid-flight. Everyone has a version of the Doctor they couldn't stand, although the most common are Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy. Perhaps it was because the previous incarnation was our favourite, and no one else could measure up. Perhaps it was because of the way the Doctor was written, the kind of adventures he had, or the enemies he faced. Perhaps we just plain didn't like the actor. Either way, we couldn't wait for the Doctor to regenerate once again. Many fans were also eager to see how the writers would handle the Doctor's dwindling number of regenerations when the show returned in 2005. Would the Doctors start lasting longer? Would the Doctor die and be replaced by a new character using the same title? Would he somehow get a new regeneration cycle? Secretly, we couldn't wait for the thirteenth Doctor to appear on screen, just so we could see how they were going to get around it. So when Moffat effectively cheated by adding in the secret War Doctor and then just giving the Doctor a new set of regenerations almost out of the blue, we were left robbed of what could have been one of the most dramatic deaths in the history of television.
