10 Doctor Who Stars Before They Were Famous

By Dan Butler /

10. Alex Kingston

It's hard to imagine a Doctor Who universe without Alex Kingston in it since she's left such an ever lasting impression on the show's mythology through her portrayal of River Song. First introduced in Series 4 as a mysterious woman from the Doctor's future, it was eventually revealed that she was Amy and Rory's daughter who was kidnapped shortly after birth to be raised into a notorious Time Lord killing machine. Or something like that, anyway. She ended up marrying the Doctor in the end (for reasons that still aren't 100% clear to this day) and her timey-wimey shenanigans helped to establish her as one of the most popular characters in sci-fi history. But where did it all begin for everybody's favourite psychopath turned archaeology professor? Well, Alex's first mainstream role was in the long running BBC drama Grange Hill which she appeared in as scheming school girl Jill Harcourt for 3 episodes back in 1980. Check it out in the video above - she's the one with pig tails wearing a judo suit who exclaims, "That's not fair, miss. He's a blue belt!". Play nice, sweetie!
