10 Doctor Who Storylines That Fans Pretend Never Happened

9. The Doctor Is More Than Just A Time Lord

There's no hiding it - the history of the Doctor being "more than just a Time Lord" plot thread is a little tangled and will take a little while to tell, so take a deep breath. The story arc began under the auspices of script editor Andrew Cartmel during McCoy's second year as the Doctor. In cahoots with Cartmel, writer Ben Aaronovitch intended to have the Doctor say in Remembrance of the Daleks that he was "far more than just another Time Lord". Sadly, the line was cut from the transmitted version. In his novelisation of the story, however, Aaronovitch went even further. He introduced the concept of a Triumvirate of Time Lord founders made up of Rassilon, Omega and the enigmatic "Other". These ideas were intended to restore a sense of mystery to the Doctor, whose background as a Time Lord had become too cosy and familiar to audiences. As it turned out, Kevin Clarke's 25th anniversary story, Silver Nemesis, wound up containing the first on-air references to what later became known as the Cartmel Masterplan, with Lady Peinforte hinting at the Doctor's newly minted secrets. This distinction is now considered by some to be the only reason for watching Silver Nemesis. Some fans thought this attempt to make the Doctor's character into an enigma again were clumsy and ham-fisted and were determined to gloss right over it. And with the cancellation of the Classic Series in 1989, it seemed as though the Cartmel Masterplan had come to an ignominious end before it had even got going properly. But that was not the case...
