5. Time Lords Being Able To Change Genders Whilst Regenerating
Michelle Gomez did a great job in her role as the Master/Mistress in Series 8, there's no doubt. But many fans hate the whole storyline of Time Lords being able to change genders. They see it as worrying evidence that the Doctor will one day regenerate into a female form. This storyline has a long history, both on screen and behind the scenes. Romana's regeneration and the Master turning into a translucent snake showed that Time Lords can do some strange stuff whilst changing bodies. And Doctor Who producers have been joking about the possibility for years; although, lately the rumblings seem to be rather less tongue in cheek than before. And then, in The Doctor's Wife, the Doctor mentions the gender swapping Corsair. With that one stroke, the groundwork was laid for Time Lords being able to alter sex. And just a couple of years later, hey presto, the female Master arrived with all the fanfare of a Cyber-army. According to polls, fans are split on the issue of whether the Doctor should be a woman in the future, with more than half currently thinking he should stay male (however, they don't care if he's black). But there seems to be a growing minority who are OK with the idea of a lady Doctor. Like it or not, Steven Moffat has sided with the pro-woman Doctor group, and he has the power to make that dream real.
