10 Doctor Who Storylines That Fans Pretend Never Happened

3. The Doctor Getting Married... Repeatedly

The Doctor's increasing interest in the ladies over the years has proven to be one of the biggest changes that fans have found difficult to swallow. In fact, they frequently block the Doctor kissing someone out of their memories, even when it's not Captain Jack. Although the whole issue of the Doctor becoming a romantic figure can be traced back to the 1996 movie, with his shocking kiss with Grace, no storyline exemplifies this shift in the Doctor's nature more than his marriage to River Song. That wasn't the Doctor's first marriage, though. He's been hitched to Queen Elizabeth I and Marilyn Monroe and he was presumably married long ago on Gallifrey before his adventures began, because he had a family then, with one of his children being the parent of Susan. All in all, he's quite the Romeo for such an "asexual" being (to quote Steven Moffat). The fans that object to the growing focus on the Doctor as love interest claim that giving him these decidedly human feelings undermines his alien nature, that not-human quality being one of the aspects of the character that marks him out as different from leading characters in other series and which makes Doctor Who interesting and worth watching. Not only that, but his getting married over and over again does rather kneecap the dramatic impact of the Doctor being a "lonely god".
